How to stop Windows 10 from sharing your WiFi password

Unknown     01:48:00     TECHNOLOGY NEWS     No comments

With Windows 10 finally launching this week, we’re going to see a slate of articles discussing the OS’s new features and capabilities. Some of these are significant upgrades compared with what came before, while others could be potentially controversial. One new option, brought over from Windows Phone 8.1, is called WiFi Sense, but its debut on the desktop could be controversial given what the feature does.

WiFi Sense will automatically connect you to detected crowdsourced WiFi networks, acquire network information and provide “additional info” to networks that require it (it’s not clear exactly what constitutes additional info), and can be used to automatically share your WiFi password with your contacts on Facebook, Skype, and Outlook.

That last feature is the potentially controversial one. WiFi Sense is enabled by default in Build 10240 of Windows 10; if you choose “Express Settings,” Microsoft enables the option and allows your device to acquire WiFi passwords from friends and shares your password with the same group of people. If you choose to leave the function enabled (or turn it on manually, as shown below), it will request permission to connect to Outlook, Skype, and Facebook on your behalf. Other users on your friends list who also run Windows 10 will have their contact information shared with you as well, assuming they also enable the feature.

Microsoft claims that this feature improves security and reduces frustration. Now, instead of painstakingly spelling or writing down passwords for guests or friends, they can automatically acquire them as soon as they come in-range of your home network. The company’s FAQ states:

“When you share Wi-Fi network access with Facebook friends, Outlook.com contacts, or Skype contacts, they’ll be connected to the password-protected Wi-Fi networks that you choose to share and get Internet access when they’re in range of the networks (if they use Wi-Fi Sense). Likewise, you’ll be connected to Wi-Fi networks that they share for Internet access too. Remember, you don’t get to see Wi-Fi network passwords, and you both get Internet access only. They won’t have access to other computers, devices, or files stored on your home network, and you won’t have access to these things on their network.”

In theory, Microsoft could be right, but the company is also creating a de facto database of WiFi information. Elsewhere in the FAQ, Microsoft notes that if you choose to share this information, it’s sent via an encrypted link to Microsoft, who stores the data on their own servers (again in encrypted format). This isn’t as foolproof as it might have once seemed; we’ve covered multiple bugs related to Internet encryption standards in the past nine months.

The other concern we have with WiFi Sense is that the feature has no granularity beyond the service level. I can choose to share or not-share information with Facebook, Outlook, or Skype, but that’s it. If you share your network information with anyone on your Facebook friends list, you’re sharing it with everyone on your Facebook friends list. That’s something Microsoft really ought to have addressed when it brought the feature over from Windows Phone; just because I want to share this kind of data with some people doesn’t mean I want to share it with everyone.

The continued degradation of privacy
The risk of exposing your network connection to ne’er-do-wells on Facebook or Outlook.com is small, but it’s not zero. The bigger issue I want to highlight, though, is how features like this indirectly erode the concept of user privacy and the perceived need for good security practices. This is something we’ve talked about before in relation to Apple, but it’s not just an Apple or a Microsoft problem.

On the one hand, we tell people that they need to secure their data with strong passwords while research shows how passwords are trivial to hack — even many strong passwords can be cracked fairly easily. Services like LastPass promise to offer protection, only to fall prey to hacks in turn. When companies get hacked, whether its Target or LastPass, the consequences of these failures are often trivial. Even Lenovo, which installed one of the most appalling breaches of user-security to ever ship on modern PCs, appears to have come through its Superfish debacle largely unscathed.

This tension is at the heart of all security systems, not merely the online ones. If designing secure systems is difficult, designing secure systems that are both fast and easy-to-use is borderline impossible. Nonetheless, online companies often encourage users to share information that proper security practices say ought not be shared, while the consequences of security breaches for the companies that breach them are so small, it sends the message that hey — privacy and security aren’t really things you need to care about. And it just so happens that this relatively lax attitude towards privacy underwrites the business model of multi-billion dollar corporations, many of whom seek ever-more lenient rules on what they can and cannot do with your personal information.

On a practical level, the risks from WiFi Sense are small. But from a best-practices security standpoint, it’s far from a great idea.

AMD unveils world’s first 5GHz CPU

Unknown     01:38:00     TECHNOLOGY NEWS     No comments

In a desperate ploy to stay relevant, AMD has announced the first commercially available CPU to hit 5GHz: the FX-9590. Like its flagship predecessor, the FX-8350, the new chip features four Piledriver modules, which roughly equates to eight cores. For those of you who can’t afford the FX-9590, AMD is also releasing the FX-9370, which is identical except for a slightly lower clock of 4.7GHz. Both chips are unlocked for further overclocking.

Before you get too excited, though, we should warn you that AMD — as usual, when it comes to performance — isn’t being entirely honest about the FX-9590’s 5GHz claim to fame. 5GHz is the chip’s Turbo Core speed, not the base clock. AMD hasn’t even announced the base clock speed, leaving us to guess (it’s probably around 4.3GHz). In reality, 5GHz will probably only be obtainable when there’s plenty of thermal overhead, and not for extended periods of time; if you were hoping to build a render farm out of eight-core monsters that are stuck at 5GHz, you will be disappointed.
AMD FX which announced the FX-9590 and 9370 at E3, is framing these two chips as the ultimate gaming companion. “At E3 this week, AMD demonstrated why it is at the core of gaming,” says AMD vice president Bernd Lienhard. “The new FX 5 GHz processor is an emphatic performance statement to the most demanding gamers seeking ultra-high resolution experiences.” In reality, of course, the single-threaded (and multi-threaded) performance of Ivy Bridge and Haswell make Intel a better choice for gaming. (See our Haswell review.) The one exception, as always, is if you’re trying to build a rig on a budget — we don’t have a price yet, but it’ll probably be around $300, or a little less than the top-of-the-range Core i7-4770K.

The bigger story here is that AMD has released the first commercial CPU to hit 5GHz, with a standard heatsink and fan (fun fact: AMD also produced the first 1GHz chip, way back in 2000). Piledriver was always built with high clock speeds in mind (See: AMD’s FX-8350 analyzed: Does Piledriver deliver where Bulldozer fell short?), but 5GHz is still rather impressive. AMD may have made some tweaks to the architecture reach 5GHz, but in all likelihood this is probably just the result of improved yields from GlobalFoundries’ 32nm SoI process, which is finally reaching maturity. This correlates nicely with AMD’s recently released Richland APUs, which feature Piledriver-based CPUs capable of 5GHz overclocks.

The FX-9590 and FX-9370, both of which are Socket AM3+ Vishera CPUs, will be released “this summer.” No word on pricing yet, but they will probably be priced just below Intel’s chips. It’s also worth noting that process maturity doesn’t override physics: At 5GHz, the FX-9590 will have an utterly monstrous TDP, probably in the 200W region.

LG G4 to get Android 6.0 Marshmallow next week

Unknown     01:32:00     TECHNOLOGY NEWS     No comments

Phone manufacturers are already gearing up to update their devices to the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, as we detailed earlier, but it seems like LG G4 might be the first outside the Nexus lineup to actually receive Google’s latest. LG announced that it will start rolling out the update beginning next week, and that Poland would be the first stop on the list, with other regions such as the US, Asia, and Europe to follow, though LG has not revealed any schedule for it yet. It is a common practice among manufacturers to roll out the update to a limited-size region first, to check for any issues before a worldwide release.

The update will just not be limited to the G4, though; LG has plans to extend it to other smartphones under its wings too. These devices would be the V10, G Flex 2, G3, and G2. LG is expected to release an official schedule for the update roll-out soon. “While speed alone isn’t an indicator of great service, it does go a long way toward giving consumers the confidence that LG is committed to its existing customers first,” LG mobile communication head Chris Yie said in a statement.

At the time of Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade, LG followed the similar strategy of rolling out the update in Poland first. However, it then took months to finally bring it to users in the US. Even so, it is good to see that at least some Android manufacturers are taking advantage of the Developer Preview to speed up an otherwise lengthy upgrade process.

The Marshmallow update will bring along lots of good features, such as enhanced app control and permissions, battery life improvements (thanks to the ‘Doze’ mode), fingerprint support, and mobile payments. Select Nexus devices have already received the update, which has brought in the much-awaited ’Now on Tap’ feature to the platform. The new feature is a revamped version of the Google Now. Talking about Now on Tap, Google’s Vice President of Android Product Management Brian Rakowski said in a blog post, “[it] stays on task alongside you, instantly pulling up relevant info and helping you get more done.”

Other manufacturers, including Sony, Motorola, and HTC, have also announced the Marshmallow update for their own devices, although no one has announced any set timeline for the roll-out. It is not always the case that LG takes the lead in rolling out updates timely, but it’s worth noting it did so at the time of Android 5.0 Lollipop update, too. So who’s next? After LG’s announcement, we are hoping — nay, expecting — other manufacturers to cough up some news too.

Signal-Scrambling Tech 'Freezes' Drones in Mid air

Unknown     01:15:00     TECHNOLOGY NEWS     No comments

A new device that can detect, target and deter commercial drones could be used to keep the flying robots away from areas where they're not wanted, like government properties, airports or your own backyard.

The new Anti-UAV Defense System (AUDS) was developed by three tech companies in the United Kingdom. It has a radar detection component, advanced tracking capabilities and a sneaky little onboard device that keeps drones at bay.

Rather than melting drones in midair like Boeing's new Compact Laser Weapons System, AUDS shoots the flying vehicles with something that doesn't destroy them — radio waves. Drone operators typically communicate with, and direct, the aerial bots using radio signals. [5 Surprising Ways Drones Could Be Used in the Future]

Enter AUDS, which uses a drone's communication system against it. Using directional antennas pointed at the drone, AUDS sends the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) radio signals that interfere with the radio signals coming from the remote operator. When the drone picks up AUDS' signals, it "freezes," unsure of where to fly.

Whoever is controlling the anti-drone system can keep the UAV hovering at a distance until the machine runs out of battery life and crashes to the ground, according to a report by the BBC.

AUDS can spot a drone from about 5 miles (8 kilometers) away. After zeroing in on its target, it uses video and thermal imaging software to keep the flying vehicle in its sight. Once the drone gets close enough to the anti-drone system, it's "game over" for the drone.

Drone disturbance

Even though drones can be incredibly useful— they can help conservationists keep tabs on protected areas and help farmers survey their crops more quickly — these flying robots have stirred up quite a few problems in recent months.

Just today (Oct. 9), two people operating a small drone near the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., accidentally crashed their UAV on the back lawn of the White House. A similar incident occurred at the presidential residence in January. Drones are prohibited from flying in the U.S. capital, but laws and heavy fines don't seem to keep all drones out.

Commercial drones have also been used in attempts to smuggle contraband goods, like cellphones and weapons, into prisons. And camera-toting drones hovering over private homes have been derided as both a security and privacy concern for residents.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which sets guidelines for how and where commercial drones can be flown, has ruled that small UAVs cannot be flown within 5 miles of airports and that they must remain below 400 feet (122 meters), where they are unlikely to interfere with piloted aircraft.

But a recent deluge of complaints from pilots, as well as U.S. Forest Service employees who have spotted the flying bots near wildfires, has led the FAA to take further action against rule-breaking drone operators. The FAA signed an agreement this week that will allow it to test technologies that can detect the position of operators who are flying their drones in restricted areas, such as near airports, according to a report by Phys.org.

Though the AUDS system doesn't promise to help locate errant drone operators, it could be used to keep drones away from restricted areas altogether. The radio-jamming technology aboard AUDS doesn't scramble signals from commercial or military aircraft, which use encrypted signals, so it might be safe to use near airports.

The new anti-drone system has been tested in the United Kingdom, the United States and France, according to the BBC. But there's no word yet on when or where this drone-freezing technology could be used in these countries.

Wearable Sensors Could Translate Sign Language Into English

Unknown     01:10:00     TECHNOLOGY NEWS     No comments

Wearable sensors could one day interpret the gestures in sign language and translate them into English, providing a high-tech solution to communication problems between deaf people and those who don’t understand sign language.
Engineers at Texas A&M University are developing awearable device that can sense movement and muscle activity in a person's arms.
The device works by figuring out the gestures a person is making by using two distinct sensors: one that responds to the motion of the wrist and the other to the muscular movements in the arm. A program then wirelessly receives this information and converts the data into the English translation. [Top 10 Inventions that Changed the World] After some initial research, the engineers found that there were devices that attempted to translate sign language into text, but they were not as intricate in their designs.
"Most of the technology ... was based on vision- or camera-based solutions," said study lead researcher Roozbeh Jafari, an associate professor of biomedical engineering at Texas A&M.
These existing designs, Jafari said, are not sufficient, because often when someone is talking with sign language, they are using hand gestures combined with specific finger movements.
"I thought maybe we should look into combining motion sensors and muscle activation," Jafari told Live Science. "And the idea here was to build a wearable device."
The researchers built a prototype system that can recognize words that people use most commonly in their daily conversations. Jafari said that once the team starts expanding the program, the engineers will include more words that are less frequently used, in order to build up a more substantial vocabulary.
One drawback of the prototype is that the system has to be "trained" to respond to each individual that wears the device, Jafari said. This training process involves asking the user to essentially repeat or do each hand gesture a couple of times, which can take up to 30 minutes to complete.
"If I'm wearing it and you're wearing it — our bodies are different … our muscle structures are different," Jafari said.
But, Jafari thinks the issue is largely the result of time constraints the team faced in building the prototype. It took two graduate students just two weeks to build the device, so Jafari said he is confident that the device will become more advanced during the next steps of development.
The researchers plan to reduce the training time of the device, or even eliminate it altogether, so that the wearable device responds automatically to the user. Jafari also wants to improve the effectiveness of the system's sensors so that the device will be more useful in real-life conversations. Currently, when a person gestures in sign language, the device can only read words one at a time.
This, however, is not how people speak. "When we're speaking, we put all the words in one sentence," Jafari said. "The transition from one word to another word is seamless and it's actually immediate."
"We need to build signal-processing techniques that would help us to identify and understand a complete sentence," he added.
Jafari's ultimate vision is to use new technology, such as the wearable sensor, to develop innovative user interfaces between humans and computers.
For instance, people are already comfortable with using keyboards to issue commands to electronic devices, but Jafari thinks typing on devices like smartwatches is not practical because they tend to have  small screens.
"We need to have a new user interface (UI) and a UI modality that helps us to communicate with these devices," he said. "Devices like [the wearable sensor] might help us to get there. It might essentially be the right step in the right direction."
Jafari presented this research at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 12th Annual Body Sensor Networks Conference in June.

How to Recover Hidden Files From USB Drive and Memory Card

 Unknown     17:50:00     COMPUTERS     No comments

File loss resulting from virus infected USB Flash Drive or SD Memory Card can be frustrating. If your pictures or videos or documents have been corrupted in any way by turning into shortcuts or hidden, that is, it is still in the memory storage, occupying space but not seen, this article will show you two simple ways on how to recover your hidden or lost files from the infected memory card or USB Flash Drive.

Recovering Lost or Hidden Files Using Command Prompt  Method 1 (Hard)

1.      Make sure you have a USB Guard installed on your PC. If you don’t have, click here to download the full version. Using USB Guard will automatically remove the malicious shortcut created by the virus.

2.      Plug the infected USB Flash Drive or Card Reader (if it is a MicroSD card, you will need a card reader).

3.      Open Windows/File Explorer and go to “My Computer” (“This PC” on Windows 10) and take note of the Drive letter that your USB/Card Reader is attached. Mine is “F” as shown below.

4.      Next, Click on “Start” then navigate to All Programs>> Accessories, then Right-Click on Command Prompt and select “Run As Administrator”. Alternatively, you can just click on Start and in the search box type "cmd", when Command Prompt comes up, Right Click and select “Run As Administrator”.

5.      When the Command Prompt comes up with the familiar black screen, you will notice the blinking cursor, just type the drive letter followed by a colon, eg “F:” and press enter.

6.      You notice that the drive letter now start a new line “F:\>”, type this after the prompt : attrib –s –h –r /s /d and press enter. It will start a new line.

7.      Go back to “My Computer” and open your USB Flash Drive and confirm all your hidden files and folders now visible.

8.      Make sure your PC system is free from virus and all kinds of malwares, Click Here to get the necessary tools to secure your PC against virus attacks.

Recovering Lost or Hidden Files Using XYPlorer  Method 2 (Easy)

1.      Click Here to download and install the full version of XYPlorer File Manager. Remember, do not update after installation. XYPlorer is an optimized File Explorer for Windows with lots of tools and double pane view feature.

2.      Run the installed XYPlorer and navigate to “My Computer” and open your drive.

3.      You will see all your files, both hidden and unhidden. With this method, you don’t just see your files but you can make it visible permanently so that you can also see it in another PC when you open your drive there.

4.      To make your files visible permanently, click and select all the hidden files (those that are greyed out).

5.      Go down to the “Properties” pane and you will see many boxes there with all the attributes.

6.      Uncheck the box beside “System”, “Read Only” and “Hidden” and Click on the green “tick” sign to apply new attributes to all selected items and save the settings.

7.      Confirm that all the greyed out files and folders and now normal. You can now copy out the files or remove the USB Flash to be use in any other system.

8.      Understand that, if the other PC Windows is already infected, it will corrupt the file again.

You should always delete funny looking files or folders with unusual name but be sure that you are not removing a useful file.

Use the second method if your phone memory card was infected and you don’t want to format it. Once your recover the files and unhide them, you can put the memory card back to the phone and open all previously damaged applications and pictures.
